The DATAMIND Observatory

Supporting better mental health clinical trials with data analytics.

What is the DATAMIND Observatory Project?

Please note, the Observatory is at an early stage of development and will be delivered over the course of the Mental Health Goals programme (2025–2030).

The DATAMIND Observatory, based at the University of Manchester, is a new industry-facing analytics service designed to drive trial investment in the UK and accelerate the development and testing of new therapeutics. Funded by the Office for Life Sciences and delivered by the Medical Research Council, it lets industry partners commission analytics as a service, as an alternative to accessing underlying datasets directly.

Drawing on DATAMIND’s rich data assets and infrastructure alongside other national datasets, the Observatory combines primary and secondary care electronic health records with longitudinal cohort studies. Its core strength is the breadth of data it can draw on, combined with the expertise and experience to analyse it, across data science, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and clinical mental health. A dedicated lived experience group will guide our work, ensuring the service stays grounded in the priorities of patients.

What the Observatory will do

The Observatory will offer a menu of analytical services spanning the therapeutic pipeline. These are expected to include:

  • Feasibility and trial design: cohort discovery in linked, anonymised mental health records to assess recruitment feasibility and refine protocols.
  • Retrospective real-world analyses: treatment pathways, drug utilisation, switching and market insight.
  • External comparator and synthetic control arms built from observational data, to strengthen the evidence base and reduce trial burden.
  • AI-enabled analytics and simulation: patient stratification, target and subgroup identification, and outcome prediction.
  • Pricing and reimbursement support: treatment-pathway and cost-effectiveness analysis to support market access.

The Observatory will work with industry partners and patient groups to identify priority areas and develop new approaches aligned with real-world needs.

How the Observatory will work

The Observatory will operate as a managed, tailored service: a single supported route for industry partners, from feasibility assessment through governance review to analytical delivery, with realistic timelines agreed at the outset of each project.

All analyses will be carried out by the Observatory team within secure research environments. Individual-level data will not leave these environments, so partners receive analytical outputs rather than direct access to datasets. Every project follows strict data protocols and ethical oversight, and all outputs undergo disclosure control before release, ensuring findings are shared safely and responsibly.

We will work with regulators such as the MHRA and NICE to ensure our outputs meet evidentiary standards and deliver real value for trial and market-access decisions. The service will stay agile to new analytical methods and a changing treatment landscape, and our links with the DATAMIND TRE will support priority access to emerging, cutting-edge cohorts.

What to expect over the next four years

The Observatory is at an early stage of development and will be delivered over the course of the Mental Health Goals programme (2025–2030).

Over this period, the project will:

  • Establish the Observatory service model, including governance, data assets, analysis services, and delivery processes.
  • Engage with industry and patient/public partners to define priorities and shape the analytical offer.
  • Deliver pilot projects to test and optimise analytical approaches.
  • Scale activity over time, expanding the range of services, data sources, and analytical methods.

Funding and programme context

The DATAMIND Observatory is part of the Mental Health Goals programme (2025–2030), which is funded by the Office for Life Sciences and delivered by the Medical Research Council.

The programme aims to accelerate the development of new treatments and approaches in mental health by addressing key challenges in clinical research and strengthening collaboration between academia, industry, and the public.
