The DATAMIND Trusted Research Environment (TRE) provides secure access to high-value mental health and linked datasets to support ethically approved research for public benefit. 

Whether you are an academic researcher, NHS analyst, industry collaborator, or working with people with lived experience, our access process is transparent, inclusive, and supportive at every step. 

We welcome applications from researchers and teams who: 

  • Are affiliated with a recognised university, NHS body, public institution, non-profit, or commercial entity whose research offers demonstrable public benefit and meets our governance standards
  • Have appropriate expertise or methodological support 
  • Hold (or are in the process of obtaining) ethical approval 
  • Commit to working within the DATAMIND TRE’s secure governance framework 

Our application process is structured to guide you through each step:

Check Eligibility: Ensure your research meets our criteria. (See our FAQs for help with training or accreditation requirements.)

Submit an Enquiry Form: Provide a short outline of your project to help us understand your aims and data needs. 

Governance Review: Our Dynamic Data Access Panel (including people with lived experience) will assess your project for public benefit and data protection. 

Access Granted: Once approved, you will work within our secure TRE environment with full support and audit controls in place.

Once you submit your enquiry, the following steps will guide your progress through the application and access process: 

  • Once your enquiry form has been approved, you’ll receive a project scoping template to outline your proposed research, including timelines, data requirements, and resources. 
  • A funding check will be required if not already secured. 
  • Complete Safe Researcher Training (or provide a valid certificate)
  • Submit your completed project scoping document and submit a request for access to the IGRP application system through datamindtre@swansea.ac.uk. 
  • The Information Governance Review Panel (IGRP) will assess your application for ethical and governance compliance. 
  • You will be notified of the IGRP outcome by email. 

If your project is approved:

  • You’ll need to complete a Gateway Account Request Form. 
  • Submit a copy of your CV. 
  • Provide evidence of completed Safe Researcher Training. 
  • Sign a Data Access Agreement. 

Access will only be granted once all documentation is completed and approved.
