Improving Population Mental Health Through Collaboration: New partnership between DATAMIND and PHI UK Population Mental Health Consortium

DATAMIND, the UK’s Mental Health Data Hub funded by the Medical Research Council, is working to improve access to mental health data and strengthen research across the UK. Its mission is to make mental health data more Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR), while embedding public involvement at every stage to ensure research is ethical, transparent, and focused on improving lives.

DATAMIND has now partnered with PHI UK’s Population Mental Health Consortium (PMHC), a UKRI-funded initiative dedicated to tackling health inequalities and improving population mental health through prevention. PMHC main challenge areas of focus are currently on suicide and self-harm prevention, reducing mental health inequalities among individuals with multiple long-term conditions and understanding and addressing inequalities in children and young people’s mental health, with a focus on schools.

About the PMHC approach

The consortium consists of eleven organisations, who have come together over the last year building a foundation for transformative change. It is dedicated to reshaping the landscape of population mental health research and reducing inequalities. The team brings together researchers, policymakers, community members, and individuals with lived experience to translate evidence into action through interdisciplinary collaboration. This approach allows the consortium to develop innovative research methods and community-centred solutions, at the population-level, to drive real change.

The consortium’s work is guided by three core priorities:

  • Building partnerships: It forms strong collaborations to drive mental health equity across the UK, using data to inform policy.
  • Empowering lived experience: It embeds the insights of people with lived experience into every stage of its work, ensuring solutions are grounded in real-world perspectives.
  • Addressing root causes: It tackles mental health at a population level by focusing on upstream prevention of mental health problems.

By co-producing innovative and inclusive solutions, the consortium is committed to improving population mental health and achieving equity for everyone.

Joint work in action
Together, this partnership supports secure access to NHS and cohort data through DATAMIND’s Trusted Research Environment, encourages collaboration through shared tools and open platforms like GitHub, and drives innovation using AI and Natural Language Processing to improve understanding of mental health.

Over the next phase the partnership will lead to joint meetings, opportunities for capacity building and training for the next generation in this field, and opportunities to collaborate more closely through developing shared tools and working across shared platforms, such as GitHub.

Looking ahead
By working together, DATAMIND and PMHC are helping to build a more coordinated, inclusive, and data-informed future for mental health research.

PMHC Co-Directors Jay Das-Munshi, King’s College London and Dan Barrett, Thrive LDN said “We are excited about what the collaboration will lead to, particularly the joint conference scheduled for 21st to 22nd October 2026. The collaboration offers a unique platform to unite resources and expertise necessary for data-driven effort against inequalities in population mental health.”
