Dr Angus Roberts is a Senior Lecturer in Health Informatics in the Biostatistics and Health Informatics department, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London. Angus trained and worked as a Biomedical Scientist in the NHS before switching careers to computer science, and subsequently working as an NHS software developer. This led to an interest in the electronic health record, medical knowledge representation and medical terminology. He soon realised that if we want to analyse and reuse the electronic health record (EHR), we have to tackle the fact that they are predominantly textual, and so completed a PhD in natural language processing (NLP) at the University of Sheffield, where he went on to lead life science work for GATE, an open source NLP framework. He currently researches many aspects of NLP and AI applied to the EHR with a particular focus on providing data for mental health research and care, and on the infrastructures needed to support NLP at scale for health research.
